Cities choose to call themselves ‘Saitama City’

Kyodo

Three cities in Saitama Prefecture — Urawa, Omiya and Yono — on Monday officially adopted the name “Saitama City” for the new municipality to be created by their merger on May 1, 2001.

The new city’s main office will be temporarily located at Urawa’s city office, but there are plans to move it to a new location close to the border of the three cities.

The new metropolis will have a combined population of 1.02 million.

The three cities are merging as part of the nationwide trend to reorganize municipalities to supply more efficient administrative services.
